FURTHER INSPIRATION FOR THE MUSICAL
While musical theatre is undoubtedly my principal musical influence, classic songs from all decades of the 20th century, as well as songs from more recent years, have also shaped and added to my musical style and taste.
From Cole Porter to Freddie Mercury, from Ella Fitzgerald to Elton John, from Burt Bacharach to Adele, from the Beatles to John Legend, from Edith Piaf to Bette Midler there are so many talented songwriters and so many amazing performers that I would like to acknowledge. In the following videos I hope to give a small taste of these many musical influences also. |
20) "ONE TIN SOLDIER"
This anti-Vietnam War song from the late '60s gets me every time, the sentiment is so beautiful; peace on Earth, the greatest treasure of all.

28) "FROM A DISTANCE"
Moving up to the '80s, Julie Gold wrote this stirring song for Bette Midler in 1987. My rendition is not quite up to performance level yet, but given the drama I went to do makeup, etc., it felt reasonable to publish this one. My favourite moment is just near the end, while singing the lyric, "God is watching us."

30) "IF"
This rather sweet, though also quite sad, song was written by David Gates in 1971. His band, who recorded the song at the time, was called Bread.

31) "NIGHT AND DAY"
Cole Porter wrote this song in 1932 for a musical called Gay Divorce. Fred Astaire was the first performer to bring the song to life, both on Broadway, and in the 1934 movie, The Gay Divorcée. It has subsequently been popularised my many other singers.

32) "BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS"
A truly great song written by Paul Simon in 1969, and recorded by Simon and Garfunkel. Excellent work guys. Sorry about the sound, the piano is really boomy (not to mention moderately out of tune), but hey, you get the idea.

34) "SWEET DREAMS"
I just found this video from 2015 that I didn't publish at the time, but watching it now it's not too bad. A few mistakes, but it does showcase the very talented John Bucchino's rather sweet song.
